In a move toward achieving tech-enabled healthcare, the Lagos State Government has commissioned two Advanced Smart Modular High Dependency Units, ASMOHDUs, at Ifako-Ijaiye and Mushin General Hospitals, signaling a new era in technology-driven emergency and maternal care.

Described as “smart, flexible, and life-saving,” the ASMOHDUs blend cutting-edge medical technology with digital systems that enable real-time patient monitoring, data-driven decision-making, and remote consultations, transforming how critical care is delivered in public hospitals.

The initiative, driven by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration, is designed to curb maternal and emergency-related deaths by integrating smart health infrastructure into the state’s medical system.

Speaking at the unveiling ceremony, the Special Adviser to the Governor on IMG 20251018 WA0027Health, Dr. Kemi Ogunyemi, described the innovation as a reflection of Lagos’ commitment to combining compassion with technology.

“These smart modular HDUs represent our mission to make life-saving care accessible, affordable, and powered by technology. Every Lagosian deserves the chance to survive an emergency,” she said.

Dr. Ogunyemi explained that the modular units are not just rooms filled with machines but “smart environments where every second counts.” They feature automated monitoring systems, integrated gas pipelines, and digital dashboards that support faster diagnosis and intervention, particularly during maternal and neonatal emergencies.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, Dr. Olusegun Ogboye, revealed that the smart HDUs are part of a statewide vision to modernize public healthcare through innovation.

“We now have five fully functional HDUs across Lagos, all digitally integrated. These facilities are built to provide superior care — from emergency response to remote specialist support,” he noted.

He highlighted ongoing digital reforms such as the Smart Health Information Platform (SHIP) and the adoption of telemedicine tools across Lagos hospitals, enabling real-time consultations with specialists anywhere in the world.

According to Dr. Olusoga Oduwole, Director of Medical Project Implementation, the new ASMOHDUs were engineered with sustainability and technology at their core.

“Each unit is modular, eco-friendly, and tech-enabled. With SHIP integration and the Remote Monitoring and Supervision Modular System (REMASMS), doctors can manage patients virtually and access clinical data in real time. That’s the future of healthcare delivery,” he explained.

The innovation was delivered in partnership with HAMIBRA Integrated Services Nigeria Limited, which developed the prototype model using advanced design features such as HEPA-filter air systems, gas pipeline infrastructure, and remote diagnostic interfaces.

HAMIBRA’s MD/CEO, Mr. Sulaiman Hammed, described the project as a “bridge between general wards and intensive care units,” adding that it represents a scalable blueprint for smart healthcare infrastructure across Nigeria.

Medical professionals at both hospitals described the initiative as transformative. Dr. Oluwole Adeyefa, Senior Medical Officer at Ifako-Ijaiye, said:

“This HDU rivals standard ICUs in technology and design. It has already improved our emergency response capacity and patient survival rates.”

Similarly, Mrs. Mariam Ogunmola, Senior Nursing Officer at Mushin General Hospital, praised the facility’s real-time monitoring tools and training programs that have “upgraded staff skills and boosted morale.”

The commissioning marks a major step in Lagos’ journey toward universal health coverage powered by innovation. By combining modular infrastructure with smart technology, the state is proving that compassionate care and cutting-edge solutions can coexist — and save lives.

With its latest digital health milestone, Lagos reinforces its position as Nigeria’s Centre of Excellence in smart, data-driven healthcare delivery.
