In a significant step toward fostering a secure digital ecosystem, TikTok has partnered with the National Information Technology Development Agency, NITDA, and Data Science Nigeria, DSN, to launch the second phase of its #SaferTogether campaign. This initiative focuses on equipping communities with critical digital literacy skills to protect young and vulnerable users from online risks.

Building on its 2022 debut, #SaferTogether has already made a measurable impact, reaching over 1,500 parents and teachers with practical knowledge on TikTok’s safety features and promoting mental well-being online. This year, the campaign’s scope has expanded to tackle emerging challenges such as misinformation, cyberbullying, and online exploitation.

TikTok’s Government Relations and Public Policy Director for Africa, Fortune Mgwili-Sibanda, emphasized the importance of the initiative:
“Digital literacy is a cornerstone of a safe and vibrant online community. By empowering those who guide and protect young users—parents, teachers, and guardians—we ensure not only the safety of our platform but also the integrity of the digital environment as a whole.”

NITDA’s Director-General, Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, highlighted the significance of this collaboration:
“This partnership underscores our commitment to equipping Nigerians with the skills and tools they need to thrive in the digital age while safeguarding themselves against online threats. Together with TikTok and DSN, we are paving the way for a more secure and inclusive digital environment.”

Expanding Geographic Reach and Stakeholder Engagement
This phase of the campaign brings workshops to new regions, including Edo and Kaduna States, engaging a diverse range of stakeholders, such as educators, parents, policymakers, and community leaders. Topics like digital citizenship, child safety online, and combating misinformation take center stage in these workshops, reflecting a collective responsibility to create safer digital spaces.

CEO of DSN, Dr. Olubayo Adekanmbi, shared his excitement about the campaign’s growth:
“We are thrilled to expand the #SaferTogether initiative, which aligns perfectly with our mission to foster responsible use of technology. By empowering stakeholders with knowledge, we can collectively create a safer, more informed society.”

Beyond the workshops, TikTok is providing accessible online resources through its Safety Centre and Guardian’s Guide. These tools offer actionable tips and up-to-date information, ensuring that the lessons from #SaferTogether resonates beyond the classroom and reaches wider audiences.

By uniting the strengths of TikTok, NITDA, and DSN, the #SaferTogether campaign represents a collaborative effort to ensure young digital users in Nigeria can navigate online spaces safely and responsibly.
