Nigeria’s telecommunications industry is witnessing heightened competition as mobile number portability, MNP, surged to 8,708 in January 2025, marking a significant rise from 2,998 in December 2024.
The data from the Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, highlights a growing shift in consumer preferences driven by service quality, pricing, and network reliability.
MTN Nigeria emerged as the biggest beneficiary, attracting 5,551 incoming porting requests, while Airtel followed with 2,414. Globacom and 9mobile saw 736 and 7 porting requests, respectively.
The spike in MNP signals an ongoing battle for subscribers, as telecom operators strive to enhance network performance and customer satisfaction.
The porting trend in 2024 fluctuated, peaking in May at 10,157 before hitting a low of 2,902 in September. The latest increase suggests that subscribers remain highly responsive to network offerings, with service quality playing a crucial role in switching decisions.
As the competition intensifies, industry players are expected to introduce more innovations and customer-centric strategies to retain and attract subscribers. With demand for seamless connectivity on the rise, Nigeria’s telecom sector is poised for further transformations in the coming months.
