FG inaugurates committee to steer Digital Identification for Development Project Ecosystem

The Federal Government has officially inaugurated the Nigeria Digital Identification for Development Project Ecosystem Steering Committee.

The inauguration of the steering Committee held at the conference room of the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF) Abuja, by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, which is said signifies a pivotal step in Nigeria’s commitment to achieving digital transformation and fostering inclusive development across the nation.

The Steering Committee is mandated to guide the strategic direction of the Nigeria Digital D4D Project.

The project’s vision is to establish a secure and verifiable digital identity for every Nigerian, thereby enhancing service delivery, governance, and creating opportunities for growth in the digital economy.

Inaugurating the Committee, the SGF, Sen. George Akume, underscored the
immense potential of the Nigeria Digita ID4D Project to revoutionize
identification and access to services.

He emphasizes the need to address
challenges related to data privacy, accessibility, and citizen engagement to
ensure the project’s success.

The Nigeria Digita ID4D project, he said holds immense promise in revolutionizing identification and access to services.

In her welcome address, the DG/CEO NMC, Engr. Abisoye Coker-Odusote,
highlighted the importance of digital identity in driving socioeconomic
development and empowering the citizens.

She expressed confidence in the project’s transformative impact and looking forward to the Steering Committee’s collective efforts.

Engr. Coker said “the Nigeria Digital identification for Development Program represents a bold and ambitious initiative aimed at leveraging digital technologies to enhance service delivery, improve governance, and unlock opportunities for our citizens”.

The Steering Committee’s mandate is formulate policy to
foster a collaborative governance structure that will oversee the project’s
implementation.

The Committee is also tasked with ensuring that the project aligns with international best practices and respects the privacy and rights of al
Nigerians.

Engr. CokerOdusote said the Commission would work closely with the Steering Committee and all partners to realize the vision of a digitally empowered Nigeria.

Members of the Committee include: the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (Chairman), Minister of Finance, Minister of Budget and National Planning, Minister of Health, Minister of Education, Minister of Communications and Digita Economy, and the Director General/Chief Executive Officer of the National Identity Management Commission (Secretary), amongst others.
