By Stanley Iwuoha

More than 500,000 data protection officers are needed in Nigeria’s information space if the country has determined to maximise data wealth.

These lot will ensure that accurate data is processed and protected in real time.

Nigeria’s data Commissioner, Dr Vincent Olatunji disclosed this to BrandXposure while answering questions bordering on how the country could leverage abundant data resources.

Olatunji said, “I am glad that this is coming at this time because it is like giving credence to what we are doing and identifying the areas we need to focus on”.

“There is a deficit of manpower in these areas and in an area like data protection, we need minimum of 500,000 data protection officers to be where we want to be.”

Recall that the National Board for Technical Education, NBTE, had on January 8, sent letters to the Heads of Polytechnics and Mono-technics, directing the unbundling of HND Computer Science course into four specialised areas.

The specialised areas are Artificial Intelligence, Networking and Cloud Computing, Software and Web Development, as well as Cyber security and Data Protection.

He urged both public and private organizations to ensure they have at least a data protection officer for efficiency and effective data processing in their dormain.
