It wasn’t your regular red-carpet affair—it was a digital extravaganza with a twist! The 2024 Social Media Awards, SMA, lit up the stage, celebrating viral stars, big hearts, and groundbreaking innovations in the online world.
The inimitable Brain Jotter, aka Chukwuemeka Amuzie, who snagged the coveted Overall Best Social Media Content Creator award. His hilarious skit remix of a 1983 Mike Ejeagha highlife song had audiences laughing and singing all year.
But wait, the spotlight wasn’t just on Jotter. Mark Angel, the king of Facebook comedy, bagged the Best Facebook Content Creator title, while Tacha, former Big Brother Naija icon and queen of influence, was crowned Social Media Influencer of the Year among others.
This year’s SMA wasn’t just about glitz and glamour—it had heart. The organizers rolled out charitable initiatives that brought smiles to hospital patients, paid bills, and donated to orphanages.
“We’re here to do more than applaud creativity,” said Mr. Emmanuel Nwafor, the visionary behind SMA. “We’re harnessing social media’s power to create real-world change.”
In keeping with the ever-changing digital space, SMA 2024 introduced fresh award categories, including special recognitions for social media users who inspire change. Think influencers, philanthropists, and yes—journalists!
“Social media isn’t just about memes and reels anymore,” co-convener Mr. Maxwell Nzekwe explained. “It’s a tool for driving impact, and we’re honoring those making it happen.”
Corporate stars had their moment, with Palmpay scooping up the award for Best Use of Social Media on a Financial Technology Platform. And with a whopping 37 categories, there was room for everyone—from indie creators to big-name brands.
SMA also launched programs that really hit home: scholarships, WAEC fee sponsorships for underprivileged students, and more.
“This wasn’t just a show, it was a movement to touch lives and inspire others,” said Nzekwe, summing up the vibe.
