The Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria, ATCON, has acknowledged the Nigerian Communications Commission’s, NCC, recent approval of tariff adjustments for telecommunications operators, describing it as a necessary step to address the mounting operational challenges within the industry.

President of ATCON, Mr. Tony Izuagbe Emoekpere, in a statement said: ATCON commends the NCC’s collaborative and consultative approach in reaching this decision, which underscores its commitment to maintaining a balance between the interests of consumers and operators.
“The association eagerly anticipates the release of the official document, as stipulated in the Nigerian Communications Act 2003, to provide clarity on the specifics of this adjustment and guide its implementation effectively.

“For over a decade, telecommunications tariffs in Nigeria have remained unchanged, despite inflation, foreign exchange fluctuations, and significant investments required to meet escalating consumer demand. These challenges have placed immense financial pressure on operators, threatening the sustainability of a sector critical to Nigeria’s digital economy.

“While the approved tariff adjustment—capped at a maximum of 50%—does not fully meet the operators’ request for a 100% increase, ATCON recognizes it as a step toward bridging the gap between operational costs and revenues. The adjustment will enable operators to continue investing in infrastructure, expand coverage, and enhance service quality for Nigerians.

“ATCON applauds the NCC for taking decisive action to address these industry realities and urges the Commission to maintain open engagement with operators to tackle other operational challenges hindering efficiency.”

Reassuring the Nigerian public, ATCON stated that this adjustment is aimed at delivering significant long-term benefits to consumers. Telecommunications operators are committed to reinvesting additional revenues into improving network quality, expanding access to digital services, and enhancing the overall customer experience. These efforts will ensure better connectivity, wider coverage, and innovative solutions tailored to meet the evolving needs of Nigerians.

Emoekpere stated: “ATCON stands firmly with its members and remains dedicated to fostering an environment that supports sustained investment and innovation within the telecommunications sector.
“We are committed to contributing to Nigeria’s national development and economic growth through enhanced digital connectivity and services.”
The association assures all Nigerians that it will continue to advocate for a thriving telecommunications sector that drives the nation’s digital economy forward, creating value for consumers, businesses, and the entire country.
